Emergency remote teaching in process simulation using DWSIM: a case study from DIQ-UMAG, Chilean Patagonia

<p align="left">Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Chilean universities were forced transition from face-to-face classes online instruction. In response, Department of Chemical Engineering (DIQ) at University Magallanes sought alternative strategies for remote teaching. This article reports on their experience delivering technical process simulation skills final-year undergraduate chemical engineering students. Due difficulties connecting with commercial software Aspen HYSYS, which was housed university, department turned open-source software, DWSIM, as an alternative. The material content adapted, and video tutorials created meet learning objectives. taught in a new module within Project course develop needed students design simulate plant. Positive feedback constructive criticism received through anonymous surveys discussion forums. DIQ launched its YouTube channel, DIQ_DWSIM, has had positive impact Spanish-speaking individuals seeking learn DWSIM. Additionally, two have used channel support courses. A second survey audience further solidified value this open educational resource higher education learning. </p>
